Week one 6pm SU meeting 9/10/12

Daytime

For the Bucks live event the group feel that during the day time the event should be more aimed towards the families of High Wycombe rather than the students and others. In order to do this we thought that we should pay attention to the animated version of the Alice in wonderland film made in 1951 and save the more twisted Tim Burton version for the night time event.

In order to make that daytime event seem more authentic and more family friendly we liked the idea of circus acts such as the jugglers and magicians. However the idea of fire breathers during the day just seemed a tad pointless. For acts such as this we feel that the students of the circus society could get involved. Yes there is a circus society somewhere in the uni...who knew.

On the subject of students, we feel that getting students involved would be a benefit for connecting the university to the community. A simple way to do this is to get the drama students to dress up as characters from the film and interact with the crowd. This could also be used along with the idea of a Alice in wonderland maze in which families are sent on a journey through a short story of the film/book.

Using Bucks Fm we can get publicity for the event but more importantly the crew can ask the families how they are finding the event and get on the spot feedback so if there is a problem we could perhaps change it then and there.

The idea of a posh tea room set up in the style of the mad hatters party is a good idea if we can make it look as authentic as possible otherwise it may just come across as cheap and tacky. I would just like to point out that is my opinion and not of the group as we did not go into that idea in much detail.

The idea of incorporating music into the daytime event is a good idea because if used correctly it will help set up the theme. I am sorry to those in the group but i have never seen the animated film or the Tim Burton version but does the Mad Hatter by any chance play and instrument or does any character play one. If so we  could possibly find a student to busk with that instrument and play a tune from the film, chances are they would do it for free and just put a hat on the floor and take whatever goes into it.

A very good idea that is family friendly and also ties in with the theme is small fairground rides. Sadly this idea brings with it some issues. Cost for example, plus the organisation for a set up will be difficult to manage. Furthermore the only place they would be suited go would be the concourse which is a public area and anyone can walk through it. A relatively simple way of getting around this would be to have some fencing 4-5ft away for the outer uni walls and turn that into a path so that people do not have to walk through what will hopefully be a busy crowd. Wait just went outside for a cigarette and forgot about the huge stone seat thingys they have out there. We'll discuss that soon.

When looking through the list of suggestions, the group said most of them have potential to have a good contribution to the event with the exception of a few. The exceptions are the skate park as it does not tie in with the theme and also there is already a skate ramp place in Wycombe however the idea of bean bag chairs under the tree as a sort of chill out area could work. The idea of astro turf to create a festival feel as well causes problems such as cost and are we really trying to organise a festival in that sense.

One suggestion we liked in particular was the idea of face painting and henna tattoo with the addition of hair braiding. We like this because it could also be used at night. At night if students can have enough beverages to make stealing a traffic cone a good idea then face paint and henna tattoos have potential and will also perhaps help towards the more twisted night time feel of the event.

The next entry will consist of ideas and opinions on the night time part of the festival along with the work we will do on Thursday the 11th of October in the lecture and seminars. I would also like to apologise for the shocking grammar in this entry
